The modalities and their use cases
- Fingerprint: highest deployment volume globally; enterprise access control, workforce attendance recording, voter registration, government ID programs. ISO 30107 PAD (Presentation Attack Detection) essential for border control and national ID applications.
- Iris recognition: higher accuracy for large-scale 1:N identification; preferred for high-throughput border control. UAE Emirates ID uses iris as the primary modality.
- Facial recognition: highest convenience for consumer-facing applications; increasingly embedded in government ID verification. Regulatory environment evolving rapidly in US and EU — IOTEK designs with privacy-by-default.
- Multi-modal: high-assurance applications (border control, national ABIS) combine modalities to reduce false match rates at scale.
Compliance frameworks
- ISO 30107: Presentation Attack Detection — liveness detection against photo, video, and 3D mask spoofing. Required for any security-primary deployment.
- FIDO2 / WebAuthn: W3C standard for phishing-resistant biometric-capable authentication — enterprise logical access and consumer-facing authentication.
- NIST SP 800-76: US government standard for biometric specifications under HSPD-12 — federal personal identity verification.
- Saudi Arabia PDPL / UAE Federal Data Protection Law: consent requirements, data minimisation, and restrictions on biometric data transfer outside the country.
The SAP HCM integration layer
For enterprise workforce identity: biometrically verified time attendance data feeds SAP HCM payroll (eliminating buddy punching); access control events trigger SAP HCM position change workflows (access revoked on termination processed in real time); audit trails satisfy both physical security and HR compliance requirements. Integration via SAP Integration Suite on BTP from established biometric vendors including Thales, IDEMIA, NEC, and Daon.
Biometric identity is not a technology decision — it is an architecture, compliance, and integration decision. The biometric sensor is the simple part. IOTEK brings the full stack: technology selection, compliance architecture, and SAP integration.
